Inle Lake in Myanmar is somewhat a place out of another time. This huge flat water lake has a whole economy on the water. Everybody have seen the one-leg fisher man, and they really worked like this, while some artists nowadays make some extra money from tourists. But they have completely swimming gardens with e.g. pumpkins, watermelons, tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants and a lot more, and whole villages on stilts, including schools, temples and administration. Even the canals and waterways have some kind of regulations like in the ‘normal’ cities. Some are only for people living there, and some times you find a kind of bumper in the water. It is really scenic, and I think there are not much place that come even close to this. We rented a long-tail boat for the whole day and enjoyed the scenery.
