Vientiane

Laos capital Vientiane always seems to be a bit sleepy, and for a capital this is true. The old quarter deals mainly with tourism, with the advantage that most hotels, guesthouse, restaurants, travel agencies, laundries, money exchange and mini mart are concentrated to one area. Around the park at the Mekong banks is the daily night market located, which is quite large and offers all the knickknacks, loads of cloths and whatever.
Interestingly the traffic the also quite relaxed, and not so aggressive like in Bangkok or Yangon. What was surprising is the quality of streets, that goes down to dirt tracks even within city limits. Also later on the overland trips, it looked sometimes that the repair of highways were only done as a dirt track, without tar topping. Astonishing.
